Black Tea: The Timeless Journey from Leaf to Legend

Updated: Oct 17

Black tea, with its deep amber color and comforting aroma, carries centuries of heritage, craftsmanship, and discovery. First produced in China for preservation and trade, black tea quickly spread across Asia, where unique climates and soils gave rise to distinct varieties. Among these, the Indian regions of Assam and Darjeeling have become symbols of purity and excellence.

From the lush valleys of Assam to the highlands of Nilgiri, every leaf reflects the richness of its land, the soil, the climate, and the care of those who cultivate it.

At Dojoleaf, we honor this natural legacy by selecting pure-leaf black teas that express their origins with integrity, free from artificial oils or essences, revealing instead the true essence of the bergamot fruit and the natural depth of the leaf.

The Legend of Lapsang Souchong : The First Black Tea

According to Chinese tea history and local Fujian folklore, the first black tea was created by accident in the Wuyi Mountains during the early Qing or late Ming Dynasty (around the 17th century).

A group of soldiers passed through a tea-producing village in Tongmu, Fujian. Their unexpected arrival forced tea farmers to delay the usual drying of green tea leaves. Because the leaves started to oxidize naturally in the warm, humid air, they turned darker than usual. To save the batch, the farmers dried the oxidized leaves over pinewood fires, giving them a smoky aroma, and creating what became known as Lapsang Souchong, the world’s first black tea. Merchants later brought this tea to Europe. The tea’s deep, captivating flavor soon fascinated traders along the early trade routes, inspiring the spread of black tea cultivation across Asia, especially to India, where the fertile lands of Assam and Darjeeling became the new home of this timeless tradition.

This legend reminds us that the most beautiful discoveries often arise from patience, curiosity, and chance, the same spirit that inspires Dojoleaf’s selection of pure, authentic teas from their true origins.

Did you know? Lapsang Souchong remains one of the few teas still crafted using traditional pinewood drying methods in Fujian, China.
